Clarity, Judgement and Direction in Complex Operating Environments
FAQs
Course suitability, expectations, and practical considerations

A remote operating environment where access, movement, and security decisions shape humanitarian operations.
Do I need prior humanitarian or NGO experience to attend your courses?
No. Our Security, Risk & Crisis Management (SRCM) and Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) courses are designed for professionals entering or operating in high-risk and complex environments, including those transitioning from military, corporate, or other sectors.
That said, the courses are adult-level, discussion-driven, and assume participants bring professional judgement and responsibility to the table.
What level are your courses aimed at?
Our courses are designed for decision-makers, advisors, and operational leaders, including:
-
NGO security managers and advisors
-
Programme and country managers
-
Logistics, operations, and duty-of-care leads
-
Media and corporate personnel operating in complex environments
They are not tactical training courses and are not designed to replicate military structures or command environments.
What is the difference between HEAT and HEAT Refresher?
-
HEAT is a full hostile environment awareness course for those new to, or returning after a long break from, high-risk environments.
-
HEAT Refresher is designed for individuals who have previously completed an in-person HEAT course and want to refresh skills, judgement, and situational awareness.
Where someone has not previously completed a HEAT course, we may recommend the full course rather than a refresher — but we’re happy to discuss individual circumstances.
Do you require proof of previous HEAT training for the refresher course?
We prefer participants on refresher courses to have completed a previous in-person HEAT course.
However, we are not exclusionary. If you are unsure whether a refresher or full course is appropriate, we encourage you to contact us for an honest discussion before booking.
Are your courses accredited or certified?
Yes. Participants receive a certificate of completion confirming attendance and course content.
While certification alone does not make someone “qualified” for NGO security roles, recognised training is often a requirement within organisational duty-of-care frameworks and recruitment processes. Formal CPD accreditation is being progressed and will be updated where applicable.
Will completing your courses guarantee me a job in the NGO sector?
No — and we are deliberately clear about this.
Our courses are not recruitment pipelines. They are designed to:
-
prepare individuals for the real expectations of humanitarian and NGO environments
-
improve judgement, awareness, and decision-making
-
help people decide whether this sector — and its responsibilities — are right for them
That honesty is intentional
.
Are your courses suitable for veterans transitioning into the NGO sector?
Yes — many veterans find the humanitarian sector a strong fit.
However, senior NGO safety, security, and risk roles rely heavily on influence, judgement, and advisory leadership, rather than command authority. Our courses help veterans understand this shift early and translate their experience into NGO-relevant practice.
Are these courses physically demanding or tactical?
No. Our training is non-theatrical and judgement-focused.
While scenarios may be challenging and realistic, the emphasis is on:
-
decision-making under pressure
-
risk assessment
-
duty of care
-
leadership and organisational responsibility
This reflects how real humanitarian environments function.
What is Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT)?
Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) is used by humanitarian organisations, NGOs, and media teams to prepare personnel for deployment to insecure or high-risk environments. Training typically covers situational awareness, personal security, movement safety, and decision-making under pressure, helping organisations meet duty-of-care obligations and reduce avoidable risk.
Where are your courses delivered?
Courses are delivered in the UK and internationally, supporting UK-based NGOs and global humanitarian organisations.
Our primary UK training base is approximately one hour from London, with specific locations, dates, and delivery formats listed on the relevant course pages.
Can I speak to someone before booking?
Yes. If you want to discuss context, suitability, or organisational fit before booking, we’re happy to have an honest conversation.
We would much rather help someone make the right decision than book the wrong course.
