Clarity, Judgement and Direction in Complex Operating Environments
HEAT Refresher - 1 Day course
Hostile Environment Awareness Training refresher for NGO professionals seeking to reinforce and update existing judgement, situational awareness and risk management capability.

Bespoke or organisational delivery is available on request
OVERVIEW
The HEAT Refresher is a one-day course designed to reinforce and update existing hostile environment awareness capability.
It supports NGO professionals who require refreshed judgement, situational awareness and decision-making as operating environments and security risks continue to evolve, including where refresher training is required for organisational or insurance purposes.
Rather than repeating entry-level HEAT content, the refresher focuses on consolidating practical judgement, updating risk awareness, and strengthening decision-making in contemporary and higher-risk operating contexts.
WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR
This course is suitable for:
• NGO staff who have previously completed an in-person HEAT or equivalent practical hostile environment training
• Experienced field staff seeking periodic refresher training
• Managers, coordinators and technical staff deploying to higher-risk contexts
• Staff returning to field roles after time in HQ or desk-based positions
Participants whose previous training has been primarily online or classroom-based are welcome to attend. However, as the refresher assumes familiarity with practical, scenario-based exercises, some individuals may gain greater overall benefit from undertaking the full 3-day HEAT course.
We are happy to discuss individual backgrounds and advise on the most appropriate training pathway.
This course is not designed as a substitute for a full HEAT course.
COURSE DURATION - 1 day
COURSE FOCUS
The HEAT Refresher is designed to:
• Refresh core HEAT principles without duplicating full-course content
• Update participants on changing threat environments
• Strengthen practical judgement and behavioural decision-making under pressure
• Reinforce NGO-appropriate mitigation measures and duty-of-care awareness
The emphasis is on clear thinking in contemporary environments, not rote drills or militarised instruction.
EMERGING THREATS & CHANGING RISK ENVIRONMENTS
The course includes a focused module examining how new and evolving security threats are impacting NGO operations, including:
• Increased use of drones and UAVs for surveillance, intimidation, and disruption
• How emerging technologies affect staff visibility, routines, and exposure
• Practical, NGO-appropriate mitigation measures focused on behaviour and movement
• Reporting, escalation, and decision-making considerations for HQ and field teams
This module is grounded in real-world operational experience and framed specifically for humanitarian and civilian organisations.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course, participants will:
• Have refreshed situational awareness relevant to current operating environments
• Better understand how emerging threats affect NGO staff safety
• Reinforce judgement and decision-making under pressure
• Apply mitigation measures appropriate to NGO contexts with confidence
• Be ready to deploy responsibly and professionally
CERTIFICATION & VALIDITY
• Recognised as a HEAT refresher for staff who have previously completed HEAT training
• Suitable for organisations and insurers requiring periodic revalidation
• Certificate issued on completion
• Typical validity: 24 months (subject to organisational requirements)
RELATIONSHIP TO FULL HEAT TRAINING
For staff who have not previously completed HEAT training, we recommend attending the 3-day HEAT course.
For experienced staff requiring updated awareness and revalidation, the HEAT Refresher provides a focused and time-efficient alternative.
Post-Course Developmental Feedback
Peritus can provide confidential post-course developmental feedback to support learning, professional development and sound judgement in higher-risk environments.
Feedback is observational and developmental in nature, highlighting:
-
Observed strengths demonstrated during training
-
Areas for further preparation and consolidation
-
Suggested development pathways relevant to complex or higher-risk operating contexts
For organisational bookings, feedback may also support duty-of-care decision-making and internal learning processes.
This feedback is not a pass/fail assessment and does not constitute deployment authorisation. Responsibility for deployment decisions remains with the employing organisation.
Sample summary structure available to discuss during an initial conversation.
